99 – 10 Honda Odyssey Fuel Pump Replacement Removal – Fuel Pump Relay – Bundys Garage

BUNDYS GARAGE BUNDY HERE TODAY WE ARE DOING A FUEL PUMP ON A 2001 HONDA ODYSSEY WERE ACTUALLY GOING TO HAVE TO REMOVE THESE REAR SEATS BUT FIRST THING BEFORE I DO THAT I WANT TO
PULL THE FUSE THAT ENERGIZES THE RELAY SO RIGHT DOWN HERE IT MIGHT BE HARD TO SEE THERE’S A FUSE DOWN HERE ON THE DRIVERS SIDE
OF THE ODYSSEY SO THERE’S YOUR BRAKE PEDAL YOUR GAS PEDAL JUST TO THE LEFT OF THAT THERE’S THESE FUSES RIGHT HERE TRY TO GET SOME LIGHT ON IT AND AT THE VERY TOP THE TOP FUSE ENERGIZES
THE FUEL PUMP RELAY SO WE’RE ACTUALLY GOING TO DISABLE IT THANK YOU SO IT’S THAT 30 AMP ONE WHICH ACTUALLY SHOULD BE 15 AMP I PUT IT IN THERE TO SEE IF I COULD ACTUALLY GET THE FUEL PUMP TO RUN BUT I COULDN’T SO GOING TO PULL IT AND AT THE END OF THE JOB
WE WILL ACTUALLY PUT THE CORRECT FUSE IN THERE SO GO AHEAD PULL THAT FUSE OUT NOW WE’LL REMOVE THE REAR SEATS SO RIGHT HERE PHILIPS SCREWS THAT I NEED TO
PULL JUST GET THESE COVERS OFF AND THEN PULL THE PULL THE CARPET BACK SO YOU GOT THESE PHILIPS ON THESE COVERS AND ONCE YOU GET THE PHILIPS OUT YOU PULL FROM THE FRONT WHERE THE SCREW IS ACTUALLY LOCATED AND THEN PULL IT UP THERE’S A LITTLE PLASTIC CLIP LITTLE WHITE
PLASTIC CLIP THAT WILL COME OUT RIGHT THERE PLASTIC CLIP REMOVED ALL THE PLASTIC COWLINGS FREED UP
THE CARPET PULLED THE CARPET BACK AND RIGHT HERE IS THE ACCESS PANEL TO THE FUEL PUMP SO LET
ME SHOW YOU REAL QUICK IT’S RIGHT HERE THERE’S THE PASSENGER SEAT THERE’S THE ACCESS PANEL ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS PULL THAT CARPET BACK TO GAIN ACCESS THERE’S 4 PHILIPS SCREWS HOLDING THAT PANEL PLATE
ON SO WE’LL GO GO AHEAD AND PULL THAT OFF RIGHT NOW PULL THAT UP LOOKS LIKE FEELS LIKE THERE’S
A LITTLE GASKET HAS A LITTLE FOAM FOAM O-RING ALRIGHT HERE’S WHERE THE FUN BEGINS MY FRIENDS HERE’S THE FUEL PUMP RIGHT HERE COVERED DIRT MUCK AND NASTINESS SO I DISCONNECTED THE FUSE FOR THE FUEL PUMP RELAY SO THAT’S ACTUALLY DEACTIVATED SO WE
DON’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT POWER GETTING BACK HERE SO I’M GONNA GO AHEAD LOOKS LIKE YOU JUST SQUEEZE THIS AND PULL THIS CONNECTOR UP RIGHT HERE THERE’S A LITTLE TAB YOU JUST SQUEEZE THAT TOGETHER AND AT THE SAME TIME PULL IT UP DISCONNECT YOUR ELECTRICAL CONNECTION THEN WE’LL DO THESE FUEL LINES ONE OBVIOUSLY PROBABLY INPUT AND ONES A RETURN OR OUTPUT I SHOULD SAY SO TO GET THESE OUT YOUR GOING TO TAKE THIS LINE YOUR GOING TO
PUSH IT TOWARDS THIS WAY AT THE SAME TIME THERE’S THESE TWO CLIPS SO YOU PUSH IT THIS WAY PUSH THESE TWO CLIPS AND THEN PULL IT BACK CAREFUL YOU MIGHT WANT TO HAVE A RAG DON’T SMOKE CAUSE THIS IS GASOLINE AND YOU
WILL BURN YOURSELF TO DEATH PUSH IT THAT WAY SQUEEZE IT AND THERE YOU GO YOUR FREE AND CLEAR WE’RE GOING TO NEED TO REUSE THESE AGAIN THESE CLIPS BUT I’LL SHOW YOU HOW TO
GET THESE OFF ONCE WE HAVE THE FUEL PUMP OUT OK TO GET THIS LOCKING RING THIS IS A LOCKING RING RIGHTY TIGHTY LEFTY LOOSEY YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO GET THIS OFF BY HAND BUT 99% OF THE TIME YOUR NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT NO SO I ACTUALLY HAVE A A LITTLE PRYBAR A SMALL PRY BAR I’M GOING
TO USE WITH A HAMMER TO KNOCK THAT RING LOOSE YOU DON’T WANT TO BREAK THESE TEETH THE NEW PUMP ACTUALLY COMES WITH A NEW RING YOU KNOCK ONE LOOSE YOUR OK BUT
YOUR GOING TO NEED TO DO THIS NICE AND EASY NICE
AND GENTLY SO TAKE THE END OF YOUR PRY BAR GONNA STICK ON THE TOOTH RIGHT THERE AND THEN I’LL TAKE THE HAMMER AND OBVIOUSLY HIT THE
END OF IT SO I’LL HIT IT HERE GO THE NEXT ONE HERE
HERE HERE HERE JUST WALK IT AROUND SO I’M NOT PUTTING TOO MUCH STRESS JUST ON ONE PLASTIC TOOTH GET A VACUUM SUCK SOME OF THIS DIRT UP CAUSE YOU DON’T WANT THIS FALLING DOWN INTO THE FUEL TANK CAREFUL OF THIS METAL EDGE RIGHT HERE IT IS
METAL SHEET METAL SO JUST BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR FINGERS HANDS DOWN THERE YOU COULD EASILY CUT YOURSELF ON THIS GONNA GET SOME DUCT TAPE
AND TAPE THIS ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR OUT OF THE
WAY LIKE I SAID YOU DON’T WANT TO DAMAGE IT OR
HURT IT IN ANY WAY AH JUST KEEP WORKING THE FUEL PUMP RING AROUND (LAUGHTER) OK NOW I CAN DO IT BY HAND WATCH THESE FUEL LINES THIS FUEL PUMP HAS BEEN IN THERE FOR 15 YEARS LET’S SEE HOW EASY SHE’LL COME OUT WITH ME COME ON BABY BEFORE YOU TAKE IT OUT NOTE THE POSITION OF WHERE THIS CONNECTOR IS FACING THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR JUST PULLING UP ON THE FUEL PUMP POPPED OUT PRETTY EASILY THE FLOAT IS ON THE END OF AN ARM ON THE INSIDE THERE IT STICKS OFF T OONE SIDE SO YOU HAVE
TO WORK THAT OUT AT A SPECIAL ANGLE WHEN YOU START GETTING THE FUEL PUMP UP YOU’LL SEE
IT SO I’M JUST PULLING STRAIGHT UP I SEE THE FLOAT THERE’S THE FUEL PUMP
UNIT RIGHT THERE THERE’S THE FLOAT I’M TALKING ABOUT WHEN YOU
PUT THE NEW ONE IN YOU JUST HAVE TO GUIDE THAT
IN FIRST BE CAREFUL NOT TO DAMAGE THIS OR HURT THIS IN ANY WAY CAUSE THIS IS WHAT TELLS YOU HOW MUCH FUEL YOU HAVE ON THE DASH THERE’S THE OLD FUEL PUMP UNIT HERE’S THE NEW FUEL PUMP UNIT FROM O’REILLY AUTO PARTS MY GOOD BUDDIES AT O’REILLY AUTO PARTS IMPORT DIRECT THIS IS ACTUALLY A DELPHI FUEL PUMP DELPHI IS A VERY GOOD BRAND SO THEY HAVE A LITTLE WARNING RIGHT HERE ON
THE TOP REMEMBER DIAGNOSE CLEAN AND REPLACE SO READ THOSE NOW WERE GOING TO TAKE THE NEW FUEL PUMP LINE IT UP WITH THE OLD FUEL PUMP AND SEE IF IT LOOKS THE SAME YES IT DOES FLOAT’S THERE TWO CONNECTORS TWO FUEL CONNECTORS I SHOULD SAY ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR LOOK THE SAME 5 PRONG OK AND IT ALSO COMES WITH A NEW RING AND A NEW GASKET FOR THE FUEL PUMP SO LET’S INSTALL IT SO BEFORE YOU PUT THE NEW FUEL PUMP IN TAKE THESE CAPS OFF YOUR GOING TO TRANSFER OVER THESE CLIPS OVER HAT HOLD THE FUEL LINES IN TO GET THESE OFF IT’S ACTUALLY CUT DOWN
THE CENTER AND YOU JUST OPEN IT UP A LITTLE AND
WALK IT OFF DOWN BELOW PULL THIS OFF SLIDE THIS CLIP ON AND YOUR READY TO GET THE FUEL LINE BACK ONTO IT SNAPS INTO PLACE AND THE FUEL LINE WILL COME
IN AND SNAP INTO PLACE THERE NEXT THING WE’RE GOING TO DO WE’RE GOING TO
TAKE THIS O-RING THIS GASKET WE’RE ACTUALLY GOING PUT IT INTO THE TANK FIRST AND I’M GOING TO
ADD A LITTLE BIT OF GREASE ON THIS OUTSIDE HERE
JUST TO MAKE IT THAT MUCH MORE EASY FOR THE PUMP TO SLIDE INTO PLACE WE’RE BACK INSIDE THE VAN WE’RE GONNA GO AHEAD PUT THE GASKET IN HERE SO GO AHEAD PLACE THAT HERE IN HONDA’S OWNERS MANUAL GO AHEAD AND ALWAYS REPALCE THIS GASKET WHEN YOU PUT THE NEW FUEL PUMP IN SOMETIMES I’VE SEEN IN THE PAST WHERE THIS GASKET IS TOO SMALL AND WILL ACTUALLY WON’T ALLOW THE FUEL PUMP
TO GO IN SO YOU HAVE TO GO BACK TO THE OLD ONE SO JUST BE FOREWARNED OF THAT OK THAT’S SEATED CORRECTLY MAKE SURE IT’S
ALL THE WAY SEATED DOWN MAKE SURE IT’S NOT PINCHED OR THA THE GASKET HAS ROLLED OVER ON ITSELF ANY TYPE OF GREASE WILL WORK WE’LL USE SOME LUCAS WHITE LITHIUM GREASE PUT THIS ON MY FINGER AND RUN IT AROUND THE OUTSIDE OF THE GASKET DON’T WORRY ABOUT CONTAMINATING YOUR FUEL CAUSE ONCE THIS STUFF GETS IN CONNECT WITH GASOLINE IT WILL JUST DISSOLVE IT’S NO BIG
DEAL DON’T WORRY ABOUT USING TOO MUCH YOU COULD ALSO USE AXLE GREASE IF YOU WANTED TOO FUEL LINES PUMP HERE FEED THE FLOAT IN FIRST PUSHING IT DOWN EASILY AND GENTLY IT’S BOTTOMED OUT BUT IT IS ON A SPRING SO NOW WE’LL GO AHEAD PUSH THAT DOWN CAN YOU HAND ME THAT NEW FUEL PUMP RING WE’RE GOING TO TRY THE NEW RING MAKE SURE THAT FITS AS YOUR HOLDING THE PUMP DOWN GO AHEAD BRING IN THE RING RIGHTY TIGHTY LEFTY LOOSEY JSUT TRYING TO GET IT TO SET UP RIGHT BEFORE
I START CRANKING IT DOWN CAUSE I DON’T WANT
TO CROSS THREAD THIS FUEL PUMP RING NO IT DOESN’T FEEL RIGHT LIKE I SAID HONDA HAS A TOOL FOR THIS AND
THERE’S A TORQUE SPECIFICATION BUT I DON’T HAVE THAT
TOOL SO WELL IT’S LEAKING FUEL SO I’M ACTUALLY GOING TO GO AHEAD AND PUT THE FUEL LINES BACK ON THERE’S ONE FUEL LINE JUST LINE IT UP CORRECTLY HERE HOLD THIS CONNECTOR RIGHT HERE SO YOU DON’T DAMAGE THAT WHILE YOU PUSH SECOND FUEL LINE SOME FUEL CAME OUT SO GO AHEAD PICK UP AS
MUCH FUEL AS YOU CAN YOU DON’T WANT TO HAVE A FIRE HAZARD IT WOULD BE BEST IF YOU HAD A FIRE EXTINGUISHER AS WELL ALRIGHT SO BEFORE WE BUTTON EVERYTHING UP YOU WANT
TO PUT THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR BACK IN PUT A NEW FUSE IN MAKE SURE THAT IT WILL FIRE
UP ALSO SEE WHERE MY MY AH FUEL LEVEL INDICATOR
IS ON THE DASH MAKE SURE THAT’S WORKING AS WELL SO I JUST TIGHTENED THIS RING UP BY HAND THAT’S ALL I DID LIKE I SAID WE TOOK IT OFF WITH
A SCREWDRIVER POUNDING IT OUT BUT PUTTING IT BACK IN YOU PROBABLY DON’T WANT
TO DAMAGE THIS RING SO GO AHEAD REMOVE MY DUCT TAPE HERE PUT IN THE CONNECTOR WE’LL TRY TO FIRE IT UP ACTUALLY LET ME TRY TO GET MORE OF THIS FUEL
UP THAT’S WHY IT’S ALWAYS BEST TO DISABLE THE
FUEL PUMP OR TAKE OUT THE FUEL PUMP RELAY THE MAIN RELAY OR T HE FUSE THAT ENERGIZES THE FUEL
PUMP RELAY CAUSE YOU DON;T WANT A ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR SPARK HERE WHEN YOU PLUG IT INTO THE FUEL PUMP ALRIGHT LET’S SEE IF SHE’LL FIRE UP I’LL PUT THE FUSE BACK IN UNDER THE DRIVER’S
SIDE THAT I TOOK OUT EARLIER WE’LL SEE IF IT FIRES SO USING A 15 AMP FUSE IN THE CORRECT SPOT HAVE A BRAND NEW FUEL PUMP RELAY ALSO A GOOD THING TO DO WOULD BE TO CLEAN
THE GROUND FOR THE FUEL PUMP WE’LL PRIME THIS 3 TIMES THE KEY IS IN THE
IGNITION WE’LL ACTUALLY TURN IT ON ONCE WITHOUT STARTING IT JUST TO THE ON POSITION LET THE FUEL PUMP PRIME SHUT IT OFF AND THEN DO IT 2 MORE TIMES OK THERE’S ONE YOU CAN ACTUALLY HEAR IT PRIMING ALRIGHT FUEL PUMP IS PRIMED GONNA TRY AND FIRE IT UP ALRIGHT ENGINE IS RUNNING CHECK FOR LEAKS BACK HERE YOU CAN FEEL THE FUEL PUMP RUNNING WHEN YOU PUT YOUR HAND ON THERE LIKE I SAID WE’LL TRY AND SEE IF WE CAN FIND THE GROUND
FOR THIS CLEAN UP THE GROUND AS WELL AND AH THAT’S HOW YOU INSTALL A FUEL PUMP IN A HONDA ODYSSEY IF YOU START DRIVING AROUND A LOT AFTER A
WEEK OR SO OF DRIVING AND YOU SMELL GAS INSIDE THE
CABIN INSIDE THE VAN GO AHEAD DON’T THROW OUT YOUR OLD O-RING GO AHEAD I KNOW IT’S KIND OF A
PAIN BUT NOT THAT BIG ON A PAIN GO AHEAD CHANGE
OUT THE GASKET THIS ORIGINAL GASKET YOU’LL HAVE TO PUT THIS ON BACK IF YOUR SMELLING FUEL
FROM THERE AND YOU MIGHT ALSO HAVE TO GET THE HONDA TOOL AND CRANK THIS DOWN TO THE TORQUE SPECIFICATION HONDA IS ASKING FOR IF YOU SMELL FUEL INSIDE THE VEHICLE LIKE I SAID EARLIER SOME TIME AN AFTERMARKET GASKET DOES NOT SEAT CORRECTLY ONTO THE OE FUEL TANK SO IF YOU SMELL FUEL GO AHEAD REPLACE THIS AND THEN IF YOU STILL SMELL FUEL GO AHEAD TRY TO TIGHTEN THIS RING DOWN A LITTLE BIT
MORE OR YOU COULD USE THE OLD RING THAT CAME WE’RE GOING TO LET THIS RUN FOR A COUPLE MINUTES AND MAKE SURE THAT IT’S GOOD TO GO ALRIGHT SO I WENT FOR A LITTLE ROAD TEST SO WANTED TO MAKE SURE THE FUEL LEVEL GAUGE
ON THE DASHBOARD WAS WORKING CORRECTLY SEEMS TO BE I JUST NEED TO FILL IT UP AND MAKE SURE IT GOES ALL THE WAY UP IF THAT FOR SOME REASON DOES NOT WORK CORRECTLY TAKE THIS PUMP OUT TAKE IT BACK
TO O’REILLY AUTO PARTS AND GET ANOTHER FUEL PUMP IT HAS A LIFETIME WARRANTY THIS FUEL PUMP IT’S A DELPHI FUEL PUMP DELPHI IS A VERY GOOD BRAND SO I’LL GO AHEAD BRING THIS IN PUT THE
COVER BACK INTO PLACE SCREW IT DOWN BRING IN THE CARPET PUT EVERYTHING BACK I WON’T BORE YOU WITH

  1. so, you mention not too smoke, then you use a steel bar that can cause sparks…just as bad. Should use wood or brass on the locking ring. Not meaning to be a safety Nazi but, just following what you mentioned.

  2. Hi.. my friend how can you determine if you fuel pump is not funcioning correctly.. i have a honda 2002 and it broke down in the middle of the road once in a while, it has new coil packs and new spark plugs thanks for the help, i hope you keep uploading videos like this… thanks

  3. Thank you for this video. It was very helpful. If I just want to change the gas guage sending unit (the float) do I have to remove the entire fuel pump? I thought there was a way to just pop out the sending unit without lifting the entire pump out?? Thank you so much and Happy New Year!
    Chris

  4. Just want to say thanks, van broke down on us today and I was sure it was the fuel pump since a few days back it started hesitating to start. Watched the video and decided to tackle this right there where it broke down, my fuel pump was a little different but I got the basics we were back on the road in just a little while. Thanks again!

  5. That plastic ring holding the fuel pump in,they make a special tool you can use a ratchet and extension on to remove it.Don't ever use an aftermarket fuel pump, will do the job all over again.Airtex is one of them not to use.The clips for the fuel lines, put  them in the fuel lines and will go in much easier

  6. hi,Bundy. hoping you reply. my current fuel pump is a 5 prong and the new delphi one i got today is only 4. is that a big deal?

  7. Hi my name is Johnny popo. I like your video it was great works you did. I have one question, what is the difference between your and a 1998 Honda Odyssey, would the fuel pump be in the same location, or would it be different? can you make a video about it?

  8. Bundy thank you so much!! this helped us like crazy!! we are rolling again!!! you are the greatest!!!

  9. I got respect for anyone working on car in shorts, flip flops, polo shirt and fancy watch on.. thank you very much man this helped me a lot..

  10. good video man, I'm about to do this but just replace the electric motor. it's $10 on ebay and it's the same motor for the 6th gen accord v6. if the pump assembly electronics still work the motor is all you need

  11. great video but PUT SOME DAMN SHOES ON!!!!!!

for real your video helped me a lot I thought I was going to have to drop the tank

  12. Just finished switching my old pump out. This video was very helpful. One note on the gasket. I had to slide the gasket onto the pump past the float and circuit board to get the float and circuit board in. Then I had to slide the gasket into place around the base, then slide the pump the rest of the way down onto the base. I tried for a few minutes to slide the pump and gasket into place in the base with the gasket in position at the top ofm the pump but it wouldn't slide into the base properly, and kept folding over. Once I slide the gasket down into the base and got it set properly (while the pump was half inserted) the pump slid in easily. Then you have to get the locking ring on without cross-threading it. The van started right up.

  13. Hi Bundy! Thanks for this great video! I have 04 Odyssey that won't start..it cranks but will not run. So far I have replaced spark plugs, ignition coils, and fuel pump..still experiencing an issue. I checked fuel pump relay which seems to be in good condition. I don't know what else to check or do now. Any advise please?

  14. TY for the tutorial. I took my time and installed it in my 2006 odyssey in about 1.5 hours. I was a bit nervous about having to hammer away at the locking ring, but luckily I was able to untighten it by hand.

  15. Are any of these components (filter, pump) worth replacing before there is a problem? Should the whole assembly be replaced or just the strainer? Pump?

  16. Bud i have the same van but for some reason my gas runs short on me i was thinkin it may be the pump but now the ac wont stop running even if its off what do you think?

  17. Yo Bundy, my Man! Great video. My 04' Odyssey starts and then dies immediately. Not a smooth engine cut either, more like an ugly mumbled quick death. Do you think its my pump? Hope you reply. Thanks!

  18. Question? how much room you figure is between the floor and the gas tank towards the drivers side? I think I put a small hole in the tank installing a amp under the seat behind the drivers seat, do you think I can get to it without having to drop the tank? it is right in the middle of those seat brackets.

  19. Bundy, you do not mention what was your symptoms which made you this replacement. I am having starting hesitation and researching.

  20. Thanks for making this video. I changed the pump on my 02 Odyssey in 2012, after I'd seen a video like this, perhaps even this exact one. BUT, it amazes me how many times I hear or read advise from people about various vehicles that say to drain (syphon) the gas, drop the tank, then pull the pump. Poor clueless people.

  21. How many miles does it have? I have a 2003 Odyssey with 68k miles. Running Ok. Do you think the fuel pump should be replaced in my vehicle? It is 15yrs old but low miles.

  22. I have a question do you know where i can find the fuel pump relay on a 2002 honda odyssey? I cant seem to find it anywhere.

  23. Excellent work! I can tell you have the heart of a teacher. Unlike so many others in You tube. You show how it is done, step by step and verbally explain, every detail. Thank you, so much, for teaching us, in a clear and consise way how to do it. You are the best!

  24. Hey you mean I can still get power to my pump with it unplugged, wow, hey I did one the other day and dropped the tank out and it took me about thirty minutes complete job, exactly how long did that actually take you

  25. How about the gas tank pressure value? I have a check engine light that won't turn off. Do I need to drop entire tank or is there an easier access?

  26. Great, great video.

Two things, first you didn't show how you got the little plastic gasket onto the pump. It's a VERY tight fit to get it onto the pump and snugged up to the upper housing. For those watching, do that before putting the pump in the hole or you'll never get it on.

Second, I wound up having to pull the new pump out and pull the new rubber gasket onto the pump's upper housing and then insert them into the hole at the same time. I tried doing it the way you showed but when I started the van, the gas level display showed it as empty. When I pulled the pump back out, I saw the rubber ring had worked its way into the tank and was interfering with the float.

Other than that, it was a very simple repair that even a newbie can do. Thanks!

  27. I smell gas when I fill up the tank on my 2010 Odyssey but not so much when I only pump half tank. Going to check tomorrow for leak around the pump.
