Hi everyone and welcome to another video in our LA Special, by Razão Automóvel As you know we’ve come to the US to attend the LA Auto Show, and to test drive the candidates to the World Car of the Year 2019 award. One of those candidates is this Toyota Corolla right next to me, obviously with American specs, which we will now take for a test drive, and see what is new about the Auris’s successor. That’s right, the Auris model has ceased to exist, and from now there will once again only be Toyota Corollas, the best selling car in the world. Let’s see what this new generation has to offer. Let’s begin with what’s most obviously different, which is, of course, the design. The new look of the Toyota Corolla. The Corolla has never been a particularly attractive model, but that has changed with this new generation. It seems like Toyota has finally got it right. This Corolla is far more dynamic and attractive than any of its previous generations, both Corolla’s and Auris’s. Inside, what are the things that immediately caught my eye upon first entering the Corolla. Solidity. The whole interior seems very solid, very well built. Some materials don’t have the best quality, but they’re what you’d expect from Toyota. They may not be soft to the touch, the build is rigorous, and they will surely pass the test of time. Now that we’ve talked about the materials and build, let’s talk about another very important aspect, which is comfort and ergonomics. Ergonomically well, I have everything within reach, the infotainment system, the AC controls, in front of me there’s a dashboard that is 50% digital and 50% analog. Easy to read, I get all the basic information you’d expect, like fuel consumption though – around here I won’t be able to tell you about that, because it’s in miles, an American unit, so I can’t do that bit like “Fuel consumption is 7.0 l/100km”, but as you’ll see, that’s not really important when it comes to this model, and soon you’ll know why. I have mixed feelings about this infotainment system. Even though it has plenty of features, like Apple Car Play, GPS, and everything you’d expect from a modern infotainment system, the truth is that the interface is very disappointing. This is where Toyota, even in new models such as this one, falls behind its competitors. Interface wise, it’s quite bad. The driver’s position is very good, the range of movement from the steering wheel is quite big, and I’m really well positioned in my seat, which offers great support, and at the same time, great comfort. In terms of space, Toyota could’ve been a bit more ambitious, not that the Corolla feels cramped, but it could definitely be a tad more spacious. In truth we do have enough legroom and headroom, in the back seats, but know that I’m only 1,74m (5,7ft), so anyone who weighs a bit more, or is taller, may feel a bit cramped, but nothing major because really the seats are comfortable the suspension does a great job, and the space, though the best in the segment, is more than enough for most people, and most trips. Of the boot capacity I can say exactly the same, though it’s not small, it’s not really big either. There’s enough space to store some luggage, but having a wheel underneath ends up taking too much trunk space. But fear not, the Toyota Corolla will still fit most families. Sound wise, it has JBL speakers, which have great sound quality, and will surely keep great company to those who will spend many miles driving this car. Down here there’s a wireless charging station, I can place my phone on it… and this is also where we can control the heated seats system. Since we’re talking about comfort, let me tell you about the suspension and the new Corolla platform. The TNGA platform, meaning Toyota New Global Architecture. So this is the platform Toyota uses for every car that is globally manufactured. Unlike the Toyota Auris, which was a model that had the european market in mind, the Toyota Corolla is global, this generation is manufactured for the global market, and so it has a global platform. What does this mean for us as users? Compared to the Auris, this is a far more dynamic car, really so much more dynamic. With a steering that offers lots of feedback, more than we’d expect from a Toyota. We get a multi-link suspension at the rear, and MacPherson struts at the front. Which makes for an impressive cornering ability, this car is really very good at cornering, and the suspension feedback is also great. It’s not what you’d expect at all from Toyota. That’s the truth really, you wouldn’t expect a Toyota to be this good. The steering has a good feedback too, and does what you’d expect. Usually I talk about the engine but in this case I won’t, because this particular model won’t be available in Portugal. This is a 2.0 liter, four-cylinder engine with 168 hp, and is not a hybrid, which is why I said earlier that fuel consumption was not relevant, because this specific model won’t be coming to Portugal. So what models are coming to our country? The base model with an 1.2-liter turbocharged petrol engine, with 116hp. Also a 1.8-liter hybrid engine with 122hp. And the top of the line, a 2.0-liter hybrid engine and 180 hp. I couldn’t tell you about the engine, but let’s talk about Toyota’s new CVT transmission. Previously, when you accelerated in a Toyota, the engine would become really loud, like… Well, all that is over with this new transmission. It features a fixed first gear, so that the takeoff is faster. With subsequent gears – you can simulate 10 gears with the shift paddles that sit behind the steering wheel – we can hit the throttle, flat out, and the transmission holds up, the engine is not too loud, thus this transmission is just as good as your typical automatic transmission. With such a great dynamic performance, you’d expect comfort to be compromised, but the truth is that it isn’t. The new Toyota Corolla is quite comfortable, in fact far more comfortable than the previous Auris generation. That’s it for this video, another installment of our LA Special. Soon I’ll be driving this car in Portugal, it will be released in the beginning of 2019. When that happens I’ll be able to give you all the details that I couldn’t talk about this video. Before we go, turn on notifications for our channel, like and subscribe, follow us on Instagram and Facebook, and visit our website www.razaoautomovel.com I’m going back to the hotel, still got a few World Car of the Year candidates to drive, I’ll see you in our next video.
