VW Grand California 600 Virtual Tour | 360 degree video look at Volkswagen’s exciting new campervan

I am going to
take you through the features of the 600 working from the front to the back – while you take
control of the camera. . In the way that all previous VW Californias were based on the
VW Transporter range, The Grand Californias are built on the platform of the latest VW
Crafter vans. If you look towards the windscreen, the cab, the dashboard, the entertainment
system and he sat nav – they are all straight from the Crafter. Under the bonnet, which
obviously you cannot see from inside, there is a 2 litre, 177 horsepower turbo diesel
engine. An 8 speed automatic gearbox comes as standard. And the 680 model has the extra
option for 4-motion four wheel drive. Immediately behind the dashboard are, obviously, two seats.
These swivel – a really useful feature borrowed from the Grand Californias baby brothers.
If you swing round to the left of passenger seat, you will see what VW describe as a dinette.
It is a comfortable eating and sitting area for four people. It is also a good place to
have a look at the general finishes within the Grand California. It is very white, very
cool, very contemporary. Further round, next to the sliding entrance door, is a very useful
kitchen. It has a sink, two gas h obs, a 17 litre fridge with a freezer compartment and
a series of useful cupboards. The kitchen on the 680 model is slightly bigger than this.
But the clever thing about the 600 is that the work surfaces extend to give you more
room to prepare your food. As we move down the vehicle a bit, I just want to mention
that we have also made a conventional video, comparing the 600 and 680. That has got footage
of both vehicles out on the open road, there is more detailed spec and prices. There is
a link to the video at the top of the screen. From this position, if you look above the
front seats, you will see the most distinctive feature of the Grand California 600 model.
It is an extra double bed. Now you do not get this on the 680 version. The slatted bed
frame just pulls out when you need it. There is a drop down ladder for access. There is
a skylight with a blind and very handy reading lights and USB ports up there. VW recommend
a weight limit on the bed of about 150 kilograms. So it is probably more suitable for two children
than two adults. Volkwsagen does describe this Grand California as a two plus two. The
extra bed is in the space created by the 600’s special camping high roof which makes the
vehicle just over three metres tall. Inside, it allows a generous headroom of about 2.2
metres, depending on how you have got the vehicle configured. If you look opposite the
kitchen, you will see a white door. Behind this is the feature which makes the Grand
California very different from its Transporter based brothers. Let us go inside. Yes, this
has got to be a YouTube first. A 360 degree experience inside a Grand California’s toilet
Actually, this shower – toilet – wetroom – is a really important feature because it is likely
to make The Grand California appeal to a much wider range of customers. This wet room is
a very clever use of space. It is 82cm wide and deep – and about 1 metre 85cm tall. The
sink unit flips down when you want to use it – then flips up when you want to create
space for a shower. The tap on the sink disconnects to become the shower head. Very clever. There
are shelves with fixings for toileteries, a cabinet with an integrated toilet roll holder
that actually stops your loo roll getting damp – there are tolllwel holders, a skylight
for ventilation and a mushroom vent. The main light and mirror lights are switched on by
a motion detector. What you cannnot see from in here are the WC cassette and the filler
neck for the 110 litre water tank. They are outside. The built-in waste water tank can
hold 90 litres. So to the back of the vehicle now and the sleeping area. This is the other
main area of the vehicle where the 600 and 680 models differ. Basically, the longer 680
vehicle has more space for a longer bed. Remember, we have a separate tour of the 680. The link
is at the top of the screen. But here in the 600 the bed is approximately 1.3 litres wide
and 1.9 metres long. You sleep transversely – sideways. The mattress is 80 milimetres
thick and sits on a spung base. The whole bed assembly can be tilted up and secured
to the wall to give you access to storage. On the 600 modelm, there is about 180 litres
of storage space below the beds. The sleeping area has USB power ports and very clever little
storage nooks too. So there it is, a quick 360 degree tour of the 600. Now do not forget
